Congratulations to Germany
Congratulations to Germany on winning the World Cup for the 4th time. It is incredible – Germany has won 20% of all World Cups ever. And today was the first time a European team has ever won a World Cup in the Americas – North, Central or South.
I have never been much of a soccer fan – growing up in Alabama, the top sport was football, followed by baseball and then basketball. Other sports existed, but they were down in the noise level compared to the big three. Every year in school, the PE classes would have a couple of weeks of playing soccer, during which the instructors invariably told us that soccer would be a major sport within five or ten years so we needed to understand it.
This year is the first time that I have paid attention to the game, and I really only paid attention because of our trip to Spain and seeing the hoopla around the World Cup. So I checked out some games, and became impressed with how hard these players work. They may well be the best-conditioned athletes in the world.
So, congratulations to Germany. They seemed the best team in the field, so their winning feels right.
And as a guest at our hose said to me today: “When does ‘real’ football begin?”
Alabama opens against West Virginia on August 30. Just seven weeks away!
