Back into the Real World
The vacation to Spain and Morocco was marvelous – but we are back into the real world. It is amazing how easy it was to slip almost completely offline for a couple of weeks – in today’s life we tend to assume that we need to be connected to the internet 24 hours a day, every day of the week, every week of the year. And yet, the internet seems to have survived without me there to make sure that it was OK.
Spain was great. We visited the Costa del Sol – the Sun Coast – and took trips to Ronda, to Marbella, to Seville, to Granada, and to Tarifa. Then, after four days in Marrakech, we were in Madrid for a couple of days before flying home. Four years ago, my family took a similar trip to Italy, where we visited the hilltop towns of Tuscany. That trip to Italy was perhaps the best vacation that I have ever had, and was impossible for Spain to match.
Marrakech was a surprise and a delight. I expected it to be more foreign than anywhere that I had ever visited, and it was. The surprise was how much I enjoyed being in such a totally foreign culture. Architecture, food, modes of dress, even interaction between people were all different than here at home.
For now, the family is settling back into our normal life and routines, fighting jet lag and catching up on the things that were neglected while we were away.
It feels great to be back.
