Samsung Expands Strategy to Include Copying Rumors
Henry Mance, who reports on technology for London’s Financial Times, wrote an article earlier this week about a new patent filing by Samsung for what appears to be a smart watch. The most interesting aspect of the patent filing is that the design includes a flexible screen (to wrap around the wrist). This is interesting, because it is a feature that has long been discussed as a feature of the rumored (but never announced) Apple smart watch. That article is here: [Link].
Samsung was found guilty of copying Apple designs for smartphones and tablets in US Federal Court on August 24, 2012 and ordered damages of more than $1 billion. Now, it looks like Samsung has decided to expand its copying strategy and copy the rumors of Apple development rather than waiting until Apple products hit the market.
Here are several examples of rumors about Apple smart watch development:
On February 10, 2013, the New York Times reported that Apple was working on curved glass screen for smart watch on February 10, 2013 [Link].
On February 11, 2013, Slashgear reported on a rumor that Apple was developing a smart watch with a curved screen [Link]. On the same day, TG Daily reported a rumor that Apple was already testing a smart watch with a curved screen [Link].
On February 21, 2013, AppleInsider reported on new Apple patents for a flexible touch display linked to smart watch development [Link].
On February 22, 2013, BBC Technology reported that an Apple smart watch might have a flexible display [Link].
On April 12, 2013, Tom’s Hardware reported that Apple had listed a job opening for an engineer to design a flexible screen, which it linked to smart watch development [Link].
